In September 1996, Chris Boardman rode an Aerodyne (South African) built Lotus 110 (badged as an Eddy Merckx) to a world record of 56.375km in one hour. To this day, it is a record that has not been beaten. This bike, probably more than any other, caused the UCI to look at their rules, and decide that the current development couldn’t continue, thereby setting up the Lugano charter, limiting what future bikes would look like.
